Do You Have the Right?
Back in September, on the first day of school, Martha Cothren, a social studies school teacher at Robinson High School , did something not to be forgotten. On the first day of school, with the permission of the school superintendent, the principal and the building supervisor, she removed all of the desks out of her classroom. When the first period kids entered the room they discovered that there were no desks. 'Ms.. Cothren, where're our desks?' She replied, 'You can't have a desk until you tell me how you earn the right to sit at a desk.' They thought, 'Well, maybe it's our grades.' 'No,' she said. 'Maybe it's our behavior.' She told them, 'No, it's not even your behavior.' And so, they came and went, the first period, second period, third period. Still no desks in the classroom. By early afternoon television news crews had started gathering in Ms.Cothren's classroom to report about this crazy teacher who had taken all the desks out of her room. The final period of the day came and as the puzzled students found seats on the floor of the deskless classroom, Martha Cothren said, 'Throughout the day no one has been able to tell me just what he/she has done to earn the right to sit at the desks that are ordinarily found in this classroom. Now I am going to tell you.' At this point, Martha Cothren went over to the door of her classroom and opened it. Twenty-seven (27) War Veterans, all in uniforms, walked into that classroom, each one carrying a school desk. The Vets began placing the school desks in rows, and then they would walk over and stand alongside the wall... By the time the last soldier had set the final desk in place those kids started to understand, perhaps for the first time in their lives, just how the right to sit at those desks had been earned.. Martha said, 'You didn't earn the right to sit at these desks. These heroes did it for you. They placed the desks here for you. Now, it's up to you to sit in them. It is your responsibility to learn, to be good students, to be good citizens. They paid the price so that you could have the freedom to get an education. Don't ever forget it.'

The Assembly :)
During homeroom yesterday. We went into Mr. Sidford's room to have an awards assembly. We got at least 20 awards passed out. Then like 10 minutes into it Everybody started talking. So Mr. Sidford got mad and told everybody to go back to their homeroom's cause we were talking. So we tried to have an awards assembly but we ended up getting in trouble and going back to our homeroom's for the rest of the day. Maybe we will try it again sometime. Next time. We need to not talk. We need to respect the teachers and what they do for us:)
Chinese Acrobats
Yesterday there was the Chinese Acrobats here in town there were at the gym. They come here all the way from Beijing China. They were amazing. They showed us some cool stuff like about there food and lots of great things. Its kinda hard that they would come all the way from Beijing China. It was really nice that they would do that so that they could do that for us. THANK YOU!!!!!

8th grade girls' basketball [:
Their game was on Saturday at 7:00 Nevada time at Dixie Middle School. Jaycee W. Chelsea L. and Aleesha C. were the only ones there at first. So they had to plan 3 on 5 for most of the first half. Later, the rest of the team came and they did great for the first half and fell apart in the 2nd and lost 36 to 34.

The Klondike :)
The boys went on a campout called a klondike. I inteviewed Brandon Center to ask him about how it went. This is what he said. They got up on Caliente summit. There was two feet of snow up there. They unpacked their stuff. Then they went and made snow shelters. He made an igloo. They had beef stew for dinner. Brandon was in a group with Derek, Joseph, Jock, Derek M, and Nick. They had no leader with them. He says they slept warm. The next day for breakfast they had bacon and eggs. Then they worked on wilderness survival. They went sledding. He said it was fun, but cold to. Then they had hamburgers for lunch. Then they had to pack up and leave. Brandon had fun. But he was happy when he got home so he could get warm:) by Alexis

8th grade girls b-ball game! :) :) :)
The 8th grade girls had a game against Alamo this past Wednesday here is what Chelsea Lloyd said about the game: They had two mintutes left in the first quarter and Chelsea asks the coach, Duane Wadsworth, to call time out and he says no and then all of the sudden Chelsea just pukes! After that she wasnt allowed back in the game. :( Before she went out and puked she made a hook shot! Then made one of her foul shots. Here is what Jaycee Wadsworth said about the game: Jaycee made 3 3-pointers! And over all she had 15 points, Hailee Walker had 6, Chelsea Lloyd had 3, Lexi Robinson had 6, Tanji Tibbits had 6, Taylor Soderborg had 4, and in the end they won 34-36. Great job girls!!!

Dear person with selfish friend,
Tell him/her that it bothers that he/she is being selfish. Or don't let it bother you... try not to anyways.
Those were the problems that were this week. By the way a couple of the columns are going to stop writing in because no one is reading or even commenting.

More New Exploratories
More New Exploratories
By: Kayla Mathews
Last week on the MVMS Newspaper, I published a story about the new exploratories. We talked about the new exploratory World Travelers. Apperently Mrs. Wertz is changing one of her exploratories, Bookmaking, into an exploratory that was here last year. It is called World Travelers. They are switching French to second period and World Travelers to first period.
This week in this article we are going to talk about Band, Choir, Drums, and P.E. I hope that you will take these things into consideration when you choose your new exploratories.
Band is very fun. We work on lots of fun songs. We are going to Laughlin this semester. The songs we are playing are "Cloudburst" and "Fanfare to Joy." This is a song that is based on Beethoven's "Ode to Joy." Band is taught by Mr. Lester, and he is very fun to work with.
Choir is also taught by Mr. Lester. They perform at the concerts also. Last year they went to Laughlin and got a Superior rating. Along with the Middle School Band, High School Band, and Show Choir.
Drums are taught by Ms. Osborn. She teaches them at the same time as band. The drums also perform with the band, but they also do their own pieces also. Last concert, they performed "Santa of Seville" and "O Come all ye Faithful" with the band. Then they did their own piece, "Deck the Halls."
Ms. Osborn plans to take her drumline to competitions in Las Vegas. They will go to a High School competition and a Middle School competition. They will also perform with the band at the Laughlin Festival.
P.E. is taught by Mr. Cluff. So far they have done sports such as badminton, basketball, sissy-ball, and flag football. One students said, "Yeah, P.E.'s fun, but I wish he wouldn't change it." What she meant was that now Mr. Cluff is going to have the P.E. students lift weights. He is going to focus more on physical fitness.
This is the last article that I'm going to be able to publish about exploratories. I apologize for not being able to get all the exploratories in, but I did what I could. We hope that you all have a great semester!

MVMS Girls Basketball :) By: Caitlyn W.
This past Saturday the 7th and 8th grade girls played in St. George at the Snow Canyon Middle School. The 7th grade girls played first, playing Enterprise. That was the team the 8th grade girls had won to last week. The 7th grade girls played very tough at the begining, but Enterprise beat them 31 to 16. Better luck next time girls. :) The 8th grade girls played next. They played the team called Liberty. Right when the girls started Chelsea scored with a lay-up. They were ahead at half time 12 to 7. After half time Liberty started catching up. We were barely ahead of them with 3 minutes left of the clock. Chelsea shoots it, but misses and Lexi grabs the ball and shoots it. We keep scoring keeping Liberty at 28. The buzzer sounds, the final score 35 to 28. Good Job 8th grade girls. Keep it up! :)

Boy's Basketball by Charlie S.
One of our good players is out for 6-12 months. Charlie S. was one of our good forwards. Last year in All-Stars, Charlie twisted his knee and limped for a little while. When football came, he limped through that too. He started to limp through basketball but then his dad finally found an open slot at the doctor. He got x-rays and the end of his femur was ridged and rough. He will be out for a while, but the team is still good. Hope he gets better

New Exploratories
By: Kayla M.
As you all know the end of the semester is coming up. This means a lot of things. One of which is that you can choose new exploratories. They will pass around a new paper like they did at the beginning of the year. I will be talking with the exploratory teachers to kind of figure out what they plan to do during the rest of the year. I will also talk with the students to figure out why they like their exploratory. This week we will be focusing on French, World Travelers (new exploratory), and Newspaper.
The newspaper class is a really fun class. If you like to ask questions and write about them. It's really fun when someone writes in to your article. Ms. Osborn teaches it. It's also very fun when we take pictures!
Ms. Osborn said that she was going to try to involve the community more in the newspaper articles. She said that now since we have the new netbooks, we can send our newspaper articles to the community. She also wants to focus on longer and more articles.
French is taught by Mrs. Wertz. A student from the French class said that they pretty much learn words in French. So if you would like to learn some cool sounding words you should try it.
Mrs. Wertz is planning to learn about French speaking countries this semester. She plans to go to those places using the netbooks. Because there are more French speaking countries besides France.
As you know Mrs. Wertz also teaches Bookmaking. She has decided to change it to World Travelers. In this class they resarched different countries and did different things like tasted food from that country. A couple people heard that it was coming and already are thinking about signing up.
Now you know some of the choices that your facing. You can also see that most of these exploratories involve the new netbooks.(Which we hope you all are enjoying.) Next week I will try to get as many exploratories in as possible before the end of the semester.

Dear girl with a cussing problem,
My best advice is try to act better. First stop hanging out with people who might be a bad influence. Second, be nicer to your mother, show her with respect. Third, I don't beleive in cursing so... after you have stopped cursing, your mom won't have a reason to send you to the military. Your's truly

Girl's Basketball Team
By: Kayla M.
This year at MVMS a girl's basketball team was formed. This team is coached my Duane Wadsworth and Marty Soderborg. This team consists of seventh and eighth grade girls. They play every weekend from here untill the end of the season.
They have already played one game in St. George. Usually, the seventh and eighth graders play seperate, so the seventh graders went first this time. Sadly they lost by a close margin. However, the eighth graders played an awesome game and won. Both teams played some hard teams, and even though the seventh grade lost, they still played an awesome game.
The players on the seventh and eighth grade teams are:
Caitlyn W.
Hailee W.
Jaycee W.
Kayla M.
Kourtney J.
Tanji T.
Kelsie M.
Kaitlyn C.
Aleesha C.
Alisia L.
Lexi R.
Carli P.
Chelsea L.
Taylor S.
Jill K.
Sam S.
Also managing the team is Sydney T.
Make sure to check up on the game times and come and support our girls because they're worth watching.

New Year Resoulutions By: Sydney T.
Well since its the beggining of a new year some people set goals and try to see if they accomplish them by the end of the year ! Many people go off of caffiene for a whole year , off of candy , or off of junk food . Last year i went off of chocolate and got clear 'til 2nd week of December . I am officaly off of candy , all soda , and junk food ! Some People think its weird to go off of stuff but personally I think it shows how you can push yourself and are able to set new goals ! Please Write in and tell us if you think people should push themselves or not ! Also if you set one please tell us so maybe we can help you accomplish it !

Thank you so very much for the care package of goodies. The thoughtfulness of peopl as your self make the days much easier on the troops. I am currently stationed at Camp Bondsteel, Kosoro. Your kindness is definitely appreciated. Thank you!

Dear Ms. Osborn,
I would like to say thank you or the boxes you have sent. My guys and I really appreciate your support. People in America forgot that the soldier's are out here away from their families, going through many hardships, including deahs of loved ones tht they can not go home to attend funerals, I remember when 9/11 happened there was a flag at every house on my street. Then as time progressed the flags started to disapear. It is gratifying to know people still support us. Thank you again for everything.
Sincerely,
SGT McWilliams, Craig
